The Jose Fernandez Memorial Chair was established by the Enrique Chavez Family in recognition of his contributions to the New Mexico State University and the agricultural community. Income from the endowment is used to provide resources in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Science to a faculty member who is engaged in research by experimenting in developing new ideas in field crop production.
In 1994, Joe Corgan released the "NuMex Jose Fernandez Onion Variety" in recognition of the Jose Fernandez family contribution for the farming activities, in the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico.
